The inspiration for my Galway Girl happened when I was listening to Ed Sheeran’s music. This inspired me to paint the Galway Girl…a combination of Galway Girls who I know and all women.
Actually, my Galway Girl is a compilation of all women in my life.
How she was made:
I added lace into the art to represent the femininity of women. Also, the hand-crocheted around the eye reminded me of my mother, wearing a hand-crocheted collar on her tweed dresses, common in the ‘60s when most of the clothes were handmade and hand-stitched.
What I love most about The Galway Girl:
What I love most about this piece is the textures, the media that includes a combination of media and the vibrant colours with the reds, blues and yellows. I associate these with the fun and joy and spirit of the feminine.

Haven’t heard Ed Sheeran’s rendition of Galway Girl? Have a listen now. This video was filmed in our dear Galway City including one of my favourite Salthill pubs! According to Wikipedia at the time of this publishing (November 2023),
“The song is a collaboration between Sheeran and Irish folk band Beoga, and is heavily influenced by Irish traditional music.[5] On Saint Patrick’s Day, 17 March 2017, Sheeran announced the song as the third single from his 2017 album”
